Natural Disaster

Natural Disasters encompass a wide range of natural events. The most prevalent threats to Illinois Tech campuses include severe storms, tornadoes, extreme cold/winter storms, and extreme heat. Always monitor local weather alters and warnings. If you encounter these emergencies, it's essential to follow these steps:

Severe Storms

  • Seek shelter and move away from windows if possible
  • If in a vehicle, do not drive through flooded roadways
  • Watch for and report fallen power lines

Tornadoes

  • Seek shelter, on the lowest level of the building
  • Stay away from windows and exterior walls, if possible
  • If in a vehicle, do not go under an overpass or bridge. You’re safer in a low, flat location.
  • Use your arms to protect your head and neck

Extreme Cold/Winter Storm

Extreme Heat

  • Watch for signs of heat illness
  • Stay indoors where air conditioning is available, if not available, identify local cooling centers
  • Cover windows with drapes and shared
  • Do not leave people or pets in a vehicle
  • Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing
  • Avoid using oven and stove top
